Touring Overseas Most shows have me returning to my bed at night to crash. Occasionally I’m in a hotel room hoping the sheets were washed with really, really hot water. Then there is the very rare gig where you are in a country that you can’t even read the signage on the hotel’s front door! “Welcome to Japan.” I was blessed with the opportunity to go perform music in this nice country. Everyone treated me like a freakin’ rock star from the time I stepped off the plane, yet I was really a nobody. The sound engineers (mostly women) were motivated, qualified, and friendly. The fans were amazing and kind – some traveled by train over an hour, and brought us food (this must be a custom for I just saw a Weezer video where Japanese brought them food too.) Days were spend climbing Mt. Fuji, visiting a noodle bar, trying to find authentic souvenirs that didn’t look like I got them in the States. Mostly there was so much to take in, I just didn’t want to exhaust myself before the evening show. When a song gets written in your basement at 8pm on a boring Wednesday, it is an unbelievable experience to one day play it in a country that is really far away from that bed that you typically return home to crash in at night! |
